A unit about words and word play
Standards:
Reading Literature
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says and drawing inferences
Determine a theme of a story from details in the text, including how characters respond to challenges; summarize the text
Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings or events in a story
Writing
Write informative/explanatory text to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly
Produce clear and coherent writing appropriate to task, purpose and audience
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text
Language
Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meaning
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- define and identify figurative language and poetic devices in context (similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, puns, paradox, oxymoron, irony, allusions, idioms, proverbs/adages).
- Use knowledge of figurative language to determine meaning of a text.
- Analyze how a novel builds to show the theme.
- Analyze a character for growth.

Activities:
- throughout the book students will be engaged in word play with each chapter
- students will be doing their own version of activities shared in the book
- students will be discussing their thinking
- students will be writing about the text using evidence and explanation
